2016 Hall of Fame Inductees

The Red Onion Creative Ballarat Football Netball League inducted five new members into the Ballarat FNL Hall of Fame on Wednesday night, with one existing Hall of Fame member elevated to the status of Legend also.

In front of a crowd of over 180 people at the Ballarat Leagues Club, and with Collingwood Football Club premiership captain and former Coach Tony Shaw as the guest speaker, the following five people were inducted into the Ballarat FNL Hall of Fame and elevation to Legend status was also announced:

Legend Elevation – PETER O’CONNELL

Peter O’Connell is one of the most decorated players in the history of the Ballarat FNL, and now he joins Bill Henderson, Jim Gull, John Northey and George King as Legends of the Ballarat Football Netball League, elevated to Legend after his induction into the Ballarat FNL Hall of Fame back in 2008.

Peter’s list of achievements are…

  • 5 Ballarat YCW Junior Club Best & Fairest Awards (1980, 1982, 1984-86)
  • Ballarat FNL Under 18 League Best & Fairest Award, Dick Rees Trophy (1985)
  • 311 Senior games (155 East Ballarat FC and 156 Lake Wendouree FC)
  • 5 Senior Club Best & Fairest Awards - East Ballarat FC (1994), Lake Wendouree FC (1995, 1997-99)
  • Total of 10 Senior & Junior Best & Fairest Awards
  • Represented Ballarat FL Interleague side on 23 occasions
  • Captained Ballarat FL Interleague side
  • 3 time BFL Premiership Player with the East Ballarat FC (1989, 90, 93)
  • Team of Century for the East Ballarat FC
  • Senior Coach of the Lake Wendouree FC (1995-1997, 2000)
  • Lake Wendouree FNC Life Membership
  • Captain of the Best Team of the first 20 years for the Lake Wendouree FNC
  • Lake Wendouree FC Senior Best & Award renamed "The Peter O'Connell Medal"

2016 Ballarat FNL Hall of Fame Inductees

 

Keith Lawrence – Sebastopol FC

  • Holds the club record for the most games played with the Sebastopol FNC, 286 in total
  • Played over 100 games with the Amphitheatre FNC and Rokewood Corindhap FNC from 1954 to 1961
  • Over 22 years, played an estimated 416 games in total
  • Filled the role of Sebastopol FNC Secretary (1952-52), Vice-President (1962-64), President (1965-77) and Treasurer (1986-98) whilst filling casual Board position in between
  • Overall service to the club spanned 55 years
  • Inaugural President of the Ballarat & Bacchus District Football League in 1973
  • Life Member of the Sebastopol Football Netball Club
  • Life Member of the Ballarat & Bacchus Marsh District Football League.
  • Life Member of the Ballarat Football Netball League
  • Life Member of the Sebastopol Tennis Club
  • Life Member of the Ballarat Athletic Club
  • Holds VCFL Service Medallion
  • Awarded Australian Sports Medal in 2000 for his services to sport, predominantly Australian Rules Football.
  • Recipient of the Centenary of Federation Medal in 2003, again for his services to sport
  • Ballarat FNL volunteer of the year award is named in Keith Lawrence’s honour

Sharyn Canny – Golden Point FNC/East Point FNC

  • One of five members involved in the development/establishment of the BFL senior netball competition (1990)
  • Key stakeholder of establishing Golden Point’s Senior Netball Club (1991)
  • Senior netball team member with Golden Point (1991-1996)
  • BFNL Senior Netball Interleague team member (1991-92, 94)
  • Golden Point Senior Netball Premiership Player and Coach (1994-1995, 1999-2000)
  • Golden Point FNC A Grade Best & Fairest (1993 & 1994)
  • A Total of 94 club games with Golden Point
  • East Point FNC player during the years of the club’s amalgamation with the East Ballarat FNC (2006-07). Total of 39 games with East Point
  • Overall total of 133 games in the BFNL with Golden Point and East Point
  • Volunteer at East Ballarat JNC in various roles such as Interchange Steward, Timekeeper, Team Manager, Canteen Assistant, Trainer and Social Committee Member (2006 to current)
  • EBJFNC Committee Member and Registration and Clearance Officer (2014 to current)

Ken Eyers – North Ballarat FNC

  • North Ballarat FC player and Junior Coach (1950-53)
  • Filled the role of North Ballarat FC Vice-President (1969), President (1970-72,75-76), General Committee Member & Trustee (1973-74,77-2000), Steering Committee Member (1989-2001) and Director (1989-2005)
  • Sportsman’s Association of Australia, Ballarat President (1975-76)
  • North Ballarat FC Manager of Bingo Centre (1980-2008)
  • Ballarat FL President (1980-82) & Chairman (1984-86)
  • Ballarat FL Interleague Committee Member (1983-86)
  • Visionary of the Saxon House Committee and played a significant role in the fundraising and establishment of Saxon House
  • Life Member of the North Ballarat Football Club (1972)
  • Life Governor, Royal Children’s Hospital, Outstanding Service (1973)
  • Ballarat Table Tennis Association Life Membership, 51 years’ service (1979)
  • Ken McKenzie Award, Service to Sport (1985)
  • Ballarat Football League Life Membership (1985)
  • Sportsman’s Association of Australia, Ballarat, Service to Sport (1994)

Paul Nicholls – Ballarat FNC

  • Ballarat FC Junior Player, played over 160 junior games with the club
  • Ballarat FC Senior Player, played over 248 senior games which is a club record
  • Senior Football playing career covered 1985 to 2004
  • Played for West Adelaide in the SANFL for 3 years
  • Greenfield Memorial Trophy winner, Ballarat FC Best & Fairest (1992,1995)
  • Ballarat FC Life Member (1993)
  • Ballarat FL Interleague Representative (1991-98), captain for 3 years
  • Ballarat FC Junior Coach at U/12, U/14 and U/16 age groups

Malcolm Scott – North Ballarat FNC/Sebastopol FNC/Bacchus Marsh FNC

  • North Ballarat FC Junior Player, played over 100 junior games with premierships in all grades
  • North Ballarat FC Senior Player, played over 100 senior games
  • North Ballarat FC Premiership Player (1978,79,82)
  • Sebastopol FC Senior Player, played over 50 games
  • Sebastopol FC Coach (1983-85, 1999-2001), Runners Up (1985 & 2000)
  • Sebastopol FC Life Member (2002)
  • Bacchus Marsh FC Senior Player, played over 100 games
  • Bacchus Marsh FC Team of the Era Member (2016)
  • Bacchus Marsh FC Leading Goal Kicker five times
  • Coached Junior Football teams at Bacchus Marsh and Sebastopol
  • Coached Senior Football teams at Ballan and Learmonth
  • Premiership player with the Avoca FC (1996), also won League Goal Kicking Award
  • Tony Lockett Medalist for most goal kicked in a BFL season (1987,1990)
  • Played 20 matches with the Ballarat FL Senior Interleague side, member of the Division 1 Championship teams (1981-83)
  • Represented the VCFL at the State Championships (1984)
  • Ballarat FL Interleague Coach of VCFL Country Championship Division 2 winning side (2001)
  • Picked in the best team ever for the Sebastopol FC, Bacchus Marsh FC and North Ballarat FC
